Technical Support / Re: Game "stops working" on level 7-4
« on: January 07, 2013, 05:56:34 AM »
The latest version is v1.13 (you can see the version number in the top right of the Main Menu screen), but even in the latest version some users do seem to still be experiencing this issue in 7-4. We're looking into it. I'm pleased to hear that the workaround got you through, though - happy bastarding!

Hi MonkeyNinja,

Sorry to hear that the game is crashing for you. :( We're aware of this issue occurring on some Windows 8 setups when the game tries to play multiple sound effects at once. There's a discussion thread over on the Steam Forum concerning this.

Unfortunately, it looks like the issue is a bug deep in MS DirectMusic, so it's difficult to fix from the game-side of things. However, you should be able to work around the issue by temporarily turning off SFX in the game options. The crash in this particular level should also be fixed in the latest update of the game - are you definitely running the most recent version?

Good luck, and have fun!

Fantastic - enjoy the Deluxe version! :)

Hi MWK,

Sorry to hear that you're still having trouble with this. The problem is almost certainly a graphics card incompatibility; some ATI/AMD graphics cards don't support GameMaker's surface drawing functions correctly.

However, I do have some good news: this issue is fixed in the Deluxe edition of the game (since that's the version we're now supporting)! So, you could try that, or try the free version on another system. Either way, I hope you get to enjoy some Bastarding soon. :-)

Hi MrDuck,

Are you still experiencing this problem? What was the error message you were seeing?

Oh dear - really sorry to hear that! There's no way that should be happening in the latest version of the game (v1.09), even if our server goes down or your internet connection gives out - and the server is definitely up right now. :(

Could you describe exactly what is happening, step-by-step? (Are you clicking "Create" or "Log in"? What happens after that?)

Hmm, that is curious. If you're experiencing an issue in one operating system but not the other using the same hardware, maybe it's a DirectX or a graphics driver problem. Have you updated both to the latest in your XP boot? (If it's slow in 7, though, I'd guess it's likely to be slow in XP, too. :( )

Many thanks for sharing your solutions, guys! It's especially helpful to know that you encountered a similar issue in other Game Maker games, pantsman, and that it was a keyboard rather than a joypad causing the problem.

Sorry to hear about the slowdown. :( Does this still happen in the latest release of the game? (v1.09) There have been some memory leak fixes since v1.08 that might help with this issue.

You might just have caught the server at a slow time - I just tested it and it's working for me, so hopefully it'll work for you too, now. :)

Level Editor Discussion / Re: movement of the camera help
« on: January 12, 2012, 03:31:01 AM »
Hello - I hope I'm understanding your question correctly: you have a Security Camera that you want to make swing back and forth. To do this, you'll need to link your Security Camera to a moving platform.

Create a new 16x16 Collision Block and change it to a Moving Platform (right-click, Make Moving Platform). Drag the platform nodes so the platform is moving along the path you want your camera to point at. Then, set the camera to point in the direction of the platform (right-click, Link Moving Platform -> Direction). You can then also Set the moving platform to Invisible.

Remember to check out the Level Editor Tutorial if you need more detailed advice! :)

Technical Support / Re: I cannot get the game to run.

The installer should have created a shortcut in your Start Menu (in a folder called "Stealth Bastard") - can you use that to run the game?

The executable file that gets installed is called "StealthBastard.exe", not "StealthBastard1.08" - it sounds like you might be running the installer file again. ;)

Technical Support / Re: How do you get the game to connect?
« on: January 06, 2012, 04:18:11 AM »
Since the server went down, a few users have reported that Stealth Bastard is giving a "that username is taken" message for completely random combinations of letters, so it looks like your details might not have been registered - the game is most likely just throwing an error because it can't connect to the server. For now, don't worry about creating an account, and instead try the following:

  • Launch Stealth Bastard, and wait for the "Team Stealth Bastard" screen to appear
  • Press Esc on your keyboard
  • The game should ask "Would you like to abort the connection?" - click "Yes"
  • Click "Log in" (even if you've never created an account)
  • Enter any bogus details you like (a username of "test" and a password of "test" will work fine - while you're not connected to the server, the game won't be able to check your login details against the database, so it doesn't matter what you enter here)
  • The game should tell you that it "Could not connect to server" - click "OK"
